It looks like Sid is playing a father. We haven't seen that before in any of his other roles. I'm so pleased!

When I see this stills I don´t want to wait until the film is comming out.

Such intensity!! You can almost FEEL the inner conflict of his character, can't you?

Yes, Prince Nasir is a husband and a father. The film deals with the father-son dynamic in almost every plotline.

It is probably just me but anyone else think Sid looks weird in a Dishdasha and Shmag or perhaps it is just that I am used to the Starfleet uniform? But I just can't get over how diffrent he looks. He didn't look weird in KOH though. hmmm.gif

Ok I will go back to lurking now.

It could be that I am used to seeing guys who dress like that and never thought of Sid like that.

Khadija, maybe you can shed some light on Nasir's costumes - sometimes he's in a suit, other times he wears his robes. Sometimes his head dress (I'm not sure what the proper name is) is all white, sometimes it has a black band. I'm guessing that he wears the suit when he wants to present a "progressive" face to the Western world, but that's about as far as I can get.

Gulp! Those last two! faint.gif

He is so handsome!
(More smart comments after the "sbav sbav.")

Edited for capitalization and punctuation.

Ulli likes very much........
In the last pic his eyes have a shade of green, I think. smile.gif

I guess the white robes are more comfortable in hot climate.
But he looks so good in a suit. biggrin.gif

I love him dressed in the arab clothes. I love him in a suit, a starfleet uniform, a cowboy hat....you get the idea.

Those eyes, so intense, and I agree on the last two.

*sigh*

Late to the party. These new stills are too much! I'm now inspired to make a Sid sig. Thanks, Mel.

Wow, he really looks the part. Of course he looked the part of a Starfleet doctor, too. And I love the beard!

Sure Mel,I will do my best !
(oh and sorry for being so slow to get back to this thread, not felt like talking lately till I saw sid on the BBC tonight!)

Ok here goes, the 'robes' are called a Dishdasha and is a traditional dress worn by most arab men in arab countries, they do come in colours but white is the most popular as it is the opposite of Black which is considered by many to be a womans colour.
The head dress is a Shmag and is held on with an Aghal the black band. The shmag Sid is wearing is White, probably so as not to offend anyone as the red and white ones are mostly associated with Saudi Arabia and Jordan, whilst the black and white ones are Palestinian (the Yassar Araftat look). So by having the basic all white it can be any arab nation. The aghal used to be far more elaborate think 'Lawrence of Arabia' and you will get what I mean, not sure why they changed just fashion I think.

In Islam both men and women are encouraged to dress modestly this is why we wear long shapeless garments so as not to show off the body underneath, but it depends on where you are. If everyone around is wearing shorts and t-shirts then a suit would be seen as modest. Most of the Arab men where I live wear western clothes for the most part and just wear their traditional 'arab' gear to the Mosque.

Men only have to cover their head in the mosque so again the shmag and Aghal are more of a fashion/tradition thing oh and practical, it keeps the sun off and the sand out ! Sometimes they have them just hanging and sometimes they flip them up and over the top of the head or roll it like a turban this again is just fashion/personal taste. I noticed that Sid's character wears his both ways.

umm any other Arab/Muslim questions queries just ask and I will do my best to answer them !

Salam (Peace)

Ah ha! The nation Nasir is from is never named, so that makes perfect sense. Very clever on the filmmakers' part.

Thanks for shedding some light on this, Khadija. I imagine I'll have more questions after I see the movie (next Friday! towel.gif ).

Oh, well Syriana was on 'Talking Movies' the BBC World weekly movie review show. They said it stared 'George Clooney, Matt Damon and Alexander Siddig' ! And the pics on the web page for the show has headshots and they have Sid third after Clooney and Damon there too.

Oh I forgot something He also wears a Bisht it's a sort of cloak thing that goes over the Dishdasha mostly worn on formal occasions or by people in power likes Sheiks, royals etc.. I noticed he has it on in the 'walking down the hallway' scene, probably to show that he is a prince? Oh and apparently the all white Shmag is also called a 'Gutra' .

Friday ? doh.gif who knows when it will make it down here, probably sometime early next year. Although I put the BBC on not even knowing Syriana was going to be on and my husband saw it and went 'that's doctor Bashir!' so I don't think I will have any problems with being able to go see it.
