I went to Pride & Prejudice today and got to see the trailer for Nanny McPhee for the first time. You'll recall that Colin Firth and Thomas Sangster are both in that just as they're both in The Last Legion with Sid. Well, I hadn't realized Emma Thompson was going to be Nanny McPhee. Oh my! I didn't even recognize her at first and she's a favorite of mine. So now I have another film I'm eager to see. Odd to think of Colin as Thomas's father in one movie followed quickly by being a guard to the child emperor.

I saw this trailer online two months ago and promptly went out to Borders in search of the book to read. Unfortunately it has not been released yet but will be in a couple of weeks, so I pre-ordered mine. By the way, this story was written by Emma Thompson. My 9 year old daughter watched the trailer with me and she wants to see it as well. It opens here the end of January.

Nanny McPhee. If you have children, take them to this movie. If you don't have children, go see this movie just to treat yourself. It is thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. A real family experience. Parents enjoyed it as much as their kids did, really. Emma Thompson is marvelous as Nanny McPhee, Colin Firth is very cute and quite funny as Mr. Brown, the father. Angela Lansbury is excellent as Aunt Adelaide and the woman who played Cook, Mrs. Blatherwick, was fabulous. We will be treated to more of her in the next Harry Potter movie, Order of the Phoenix, playing Prof. Umbridge. I can so totally see her doing it after seeing her in this movie Fri. night. She will pull it off to perfection and be completely believable. Thomas Sangster, who was in Love, Actually, was adorable as Simon, one of the little boys - the troublemaking leader, if you will. I'm telling you, the parents enjoyed themselves as much as any of the kids that were there. A guy behind us laughed so hard, it was hilarious! And there was a lady clear across the theater who's laughter was a hoot! We really had a good time. I'm a little surprised it wasn't the #1 movie at the box office this weekend.
To correct my above post, Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay, not the story itself. I read this book and I actually liked the movie much better. The book is definitely for children. My daughter is enjoying it. I found it repetetive. The movie changed some of the book and for the better, in my opinion.

I was appalled that Colin Firth's character believed he was doing the right thing by marrying that ghastly woman, but there was a sweet scene in which he talked it over with his wife's chair saying they'd discussed the importance of doing whatever was necessary to appease the aunt and keep the allowance coming to keep the family together. At least we knew exactly why he was doing something so stupid even though we might want to shake some sense into him!

Shame on me for not mentioning the woman's name who was Mrs. Blatherwick. It is Imelda Staunton.
