From Reuters:

Dec 20, 2005 — BERLIN (Reuters) - The Berlin Film Festival announced on Tuesday the first seven films in the running for its Golden and Silver Bears awards in February along with two U.S. films that will be screened out of competition.

"Syriana," a political thriller starring George Clooney, and "The New World" with Colin Farrell about a 17th century English explorer, are the two U.S. films featured in the 26-film main program for the 56th annual Berlinale that runs February 9-19.

Both "Syriana" and "The New World" were already released in the U.S. but have been included in the festival that hopes to attract the celebrity actors of those and other films.

Six of the nine films selected so far will have their world premieres in Berlin. The rest of the program will be announced by mid-January, according to festival director Dieter Kosslick.

"We are extremely pleased to be able to present new films by famous directors as well as productions by young filmmakers," he said in a statement.

The Berlinale is the first of Europe's three major festivals in the new year and considered after Cannes and alongside Venice to be one of the world's most prestigious film showcases.

Making the Berlin festival unique are the 400,000 tickets sold to about 1,000 screenings of films in the competition and various sidebar events to ordinary cinema-goers, many of whom spend hours in long queues for tickets.

Two German directors will be competing for honors with world premieres. Oskar Roehler will present his adaptation of Michel Houellebecq's successful novel "The Elementary Particles" about two brothers set out to uncover the meaning of life.

Another German film, "Requiem" by Hans-Christian Schmid, is about exorcism in the West Germany in the 1970s.

Australia is represented with Neil Armfield's "Candy" about a young couple who become involved in drugs while a British-Canadian co-production "Snow Cake" is about a difficult love story that stars Sigourney Weaver.

Two films from Asia are in the program: a psychological thriller "Invisible Waves" by Thai director Ratanaruang Pen-ek portrays a contract killer; Chen Kaige's "Wu ji" ("The Promise") is a love story of a princess between three men and at $35 million is called the most expensive Chinese film ever made.

Last year "U-Carmen eKhayelitsha," a film that transports Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen" to a South African township, became the first African film to win Berlin's coveted Golden Bear for best film.

German actress Julia Jentsch won the Silver Bear for best actress for her portrayal of Sophie Scholl, a real-life heroine of the German resistance during World War Two who was executed by the Nazis.

Any chance Sid will attend the Berlin Film Festival? He should be on that side of the Atlantic in February, and it should be after Hannibal airs in Germany which should only increase his name value as a star of Syriana.

That would be great! And I will be there! cheer.gif

Awesome! I was hoping some of our German Sidsters would be able to get to the festival. It'll be at least another couple of weeks before we start hearing which celebrities are attending, but as soon as I find out if Sid is going, I'll get it posted.

Yes, yes, yes!!!!!!!!!!
Berlin - I can go! Just an hour by train. (And university semester will be finished - last exam on february 6.)
Takaya, we could go together (if you like)- I will probably have no one to come with me for that film.

Sure we could go together. It is more fun with someone around. 2thumbs.gif

Berlin ... a wonderful city but a long way to drive. I would have to drive above six or seven hour with my car to get to Berlin. And the train (deutsche Bahn) is too expensive. Since I have my driving liecense I swear never to drive with the train any more. I made bad experiences with the german train companion.

But when Sid is comming to Germany ... I would drive to Berlin. rolleyes.gif
Takaya
And you could stay at my place over night, if you want. Makes it easier and you don't have to pay for a hotel or so. wink.gif
Naddel
hmmm.gif Thank you. I´ll come back to your offer wink.gif

I didn't even know there is such a thing like a "Filmstills competition". (there are competitions for everything, I guess)
But it's nice to see that they thought of "Syriana" and Sid. smile.gif

Berlin's wet kiss
Early fest buzz boosts Teutonic pix
By ELIZABETH GUIDER, ED MEZA

The 56th Berlin Film Festival kicks off today with the gala screening of the U.K.-Canadian co-prod "Snow Cake" -- a rather lowkey opening salvo but one whose title at least is in keeping with the wintry weather now dominating the city. Stars Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver are expected to grace the red carpet tonight.
Fest topper Dieter Kosslick, now in his fifth year as head of the Berlinale, will do the honors as he meets and greets local dignitaries at the Berlinale Palast as well as the first wave of film aficionados and foreign film execs to hit town for the 11-day extravaganza.

This Berlinale is indeed pumped up, largely because of the expanded European Film Market, which for the first time has taken over the imposing 19th century Martin Gropius Bau. There are some 250 exhibitors, up 50% over last year, and a record number of films vying for deals around the world.

EFM topper Beki Probst is betting that the boost will pay off in terms of deals signed and relationships firmed up.

And even before the festival geared up, there was local buzz about the five German entries in Competition, with particularly strong word-of-mouth for Oskar Roehler's "The Elementary Particles."

Indeed, the hottest tickets on the eve of the fest were "Particles" and Stephen Gaghan's "Syriana," which nabbed two Oscar nominations Jan. 31. French auteur Michel Gondry's "The Science of Sleep" and Terrence Malick's "The New World" were also standing room only by Wednesday night.

Other movies, in and out of Competition, are likely to set the Berlinale on its ear.

"Syriana," a critique of the global oil industry starring George Clooney and Matt Damon -- which has not yet opened in Europe -- fits the profile of the quintessential controversial Berlin fave, and may indeed set the tone for the fest as a whole.

The Competition features 26 films from a dozen countries and is in fact loaded with sex and politics as salient themes.

One of the most likely pics to spark debate is Michael Winterbottom's "Road to Guantanamo," which recently moved fest topper Kosslick to say he'd like nothing better than to see the 430-odd prisoners from that American detention camp in Cuba here on the red carpet.

Among the American pics up for the Golden Bear are Robert Altman's "Prairie Home Companion," the director's take on the long-running radio format created by Garrison Keillor, which screens on Monday, and Sidney Lumet's "Find Me Guilty," toplining Vin Diesel as a mob boss. Celebs from both pics are expected to fly in for gladhanding and hobnobbing.

Several other U.S. pics are screening out of competition, including Terrence Malick's "The New World" and "V for Vendetta," which Andy and Larry Wachowski wrote and exec produced. Philip Seymour Hoffman is supposedly on route to tubthumb "Capote" and Natalie Portman is coming to support "V for Vendetta."

Iranian pics are also back in style in Berlin Competition after an almost 20-year absence from the German capital, with two in the mainbar and three in other sections. And from Egypt is that country's biggest budgeted pic ever, "The Yacoubian Building," which broaches homosexuality, a near taboo in Mideast cinema.

And perennially neglected next-door neighbor Austria scored a coup with its first Competition entry in two decades "Slumming," which could propel local helmer Michael Glawogger to wider recognition.

But Eastern European pics, which historically represented an eye on the world behind the Iron Curtain, are nowadays scantily represented; this go-round Italy too is making only a modest showing at the festival.

In short, it's a mostly Western European sensibility that dominates the selection at this edition, with Germany, Scandinavia and France repping the bulk of the titles screened, in both official sections and special showings.

The Panorama section, under the aegis of Wieland Speck, opens today with one of the most off-the-wall works of the entire fest, "Brothers of the Head," a fake-umentary about Siamese twins who double as rock musicians.

For those interested in more straightforward docudrama there's Mary Harron's "The Notorious Bettie Page," about the racy '50s pin-up, which also screens in the Panorama section.

As for the first Talent Campus workshop on Sunday, it's called Eat and Shoot the Indie Way, which will feature Slow Food guru Carlo Petrini talking to filmmakers about slowing down and improving the process.

Finally, rumor has it that Aussie rocker Nick Cave, who once lived in Berlin and got his start here, will be on hand at Potsdamer Platz to promote both the film he scored and scripted ("The Proposition") and the one he appears in ("Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man"). Whether he performs for the crowd is an open question.

Now this is cool - the festival has streaming video feeds of various events available on their website. The Syriana photo call will be held tomorrow at 14.40 and the red carpet at 19.00. Those times are local and translate to 13.40 / 18.00 GMT, 8:40AM / 3:00PM Eastern, 7:40AM / 2:00PM Central, 6:40AM / 1:00PM Mountain, and 5:40AM / 12:00PM Pacific. I think. All feeds are archived and available for later viewing as well, so no worries if you aren't able to see it live.

Ok I have just finished watching the live streaming of the press conference. A few thoughts

How mad was that ! the noise and the constant flashbulbs looked so disconcerting.

Sid looked nervous (to me)

I wished Sid and Jeffrey Wright (what a gentle man he seems to be) had been asked more questions.

And the link crashed just as Sid was answering doh.gif aggressive.gif

George Clooney seems to carving out a very interesting career, never knew his mother had been a Mayor!

Looking forward to tonights red carpet

Just came back from there...
Sid was really great looking but he didn't give many autographs. After the press conference only a few and not even one at the red carpet. We were also too far away to take good photos. But if you had seen it online and saw some fans with a big poster there were Ulli and me. cheer.gif
POTHOS
Hi Takaya.

I watched the live streaming. I did not see the big poster you were holding I did hear someone shouting for Sid but it looked like a lot of fans were well away from the front of the theatre.

I know if Sid had spotted you he would have said hello.

It looked pretty intense and very noisy, did you get a view of anyone?

Best Wishes

Jude

Welcome back, Takaya! That was fast; the red carpet just ended an hour ago. blink.gif What did your poster say? I'll see if I can find it in any of the photos.

We had a little one with greetings from here... but couldn't find a pic of it. blush.gif

There were really many people... all of them screaming for George... so I think he couldn't hear us. unsure.gif

We could see them really good, George even came and gave autographs. But Sid disappeared really fast where the reporters were. Not good for taking photos.

So you're the one in the red scarf, and Ulli is the one bundled up in the tan coat?

Man, he looks devilish in that second one. Bad boy, Sid!

Then you're in black and Ulli is in pink? dunce.gif

In case anyone is wondering about the colorful striped scarf Sid wore to the premiere, it appears that it's a sort of badge of the festival:

I just got back home! Mel, I'm the one who holding a piece of paper. We are both in black I'm looking to Jana.
We had missed us at the meeting point because of circumstances having to do with Jana +friends "personnel camera team" (She should tell that story. lol.gif )

Please tell me that it is normal to behave like an idiot when you see Sid for the first time. - If not I probably should visit a psychologist.
I was standing in the crowd at the back door of the Hyatt Hotel. (Jana was there, too but I didn't know it.) I was waiting for Clooney to arrive. He finally did, gave some autographs and went through the door.
Well, the crowd cleared away and was going back to the shopping center to warm up. Then it struck that Clooney had to come out again. So I went back to the hotel. Crowd was already there again. Then after another 30 minutes Clooney came out. I didn't expect anything more because I had seen only him going inside. But then Jeffrey Wright came. And I thought there might be more. And I didn't realise it at first - until the moment Sid walked, three meters away from me, over the street to the car. I realised it was him immediately - my new "Sid sense". I stood like frozen on the spot. (And I think my mouth was hanging open.) He vanished inside the car but it didn't move because Clooney was still giving autographs. And then there was a conversation between the two parts of my brain:
left brain part: "just go over"
right brain part: "why? They'll probably go in a minute and won't come out again."
left brain part: "you could have a closer look"
right brain part: "through a dark car window?!"
left brain part: "but it's SID!"
Left brain part won and I fought my way through the crowd and crossed the street.
There I was standing half a meter apart from Sid. I could see him conversing with the other guys inside. (the driver and two women - his manager?)
I just stared at him and thought how very impolite it would be to knock on the door to get his attention so I just stared and wished: "Please turn your head and realise somebody is standing in front of your window."
And then...he turned his head and I gave him my best smile. And...he waved at me and smiled back.. faint.gif For a moment I looked straight into his eyes. faint.gif
(Okay, he probably thought I was a maniac. What was I thinking? Goggling through a car window and even worse, after he had given me that smile, I took some photos (flashlight included). I have two where you can see him but due to technical problems I can upload them only on monday.
I have also one where he is tiny and you can see his back.
And these photos on the internet don't show exactly how good he was looking. (I liked the clothes, he should wear something like that more often. biggrin.gif )
Then I went to the red carpet where Jana finally phoned me back (problems with cell phone connection) and we found each other. At 6pm we got the idea of making a little sign. (Since Jana and friends came with that huge Clooney banner...) It was written in green ink on a not very big piece of paper I had. It read "Greetings from SidCity" but I'm afraid it was to small. We were shouting our lungs out. But he was lead away right to the waiting reporters - Clooney was the only one who came around signing stuff. (Man, he stood inches away from me - photos are nothing compared to that. biggrin.gif )
An older woman next to us seemed not even to know the name of the movie or the names of the other guys. We told "That's Sid. He plays the prince." She said that he isn't recognizable with that arab cloth he wears in the movie but nevertheless joined us in shouting his name. (And there was only us and a single voice some meters on the left. So if you heard "Sid-shouting" it was probably us. One time I had the feeling Wright heard us (he was standing next to Sid) because he turned his head. Maybe we should have shouted his name and then ask him to bring Sid to us. lol.gif But they arrived later than Clooney and probably hadn't enough time.

And I have never, in my whole life, felt so cold. I could not feel my feet, fingers, parts of my face and the pressure of the crowd injured my back seriously I think. (I still can't move up-right.) Fortunately the camera man was standing right behind us and blocked most of it.

Ulli (I apologize for any grammar mistakes.)

Edited for some horrible grammar mistakes and some missing letters. wink.gif

laughing1.gif That reaction is completely normal, Ulli. I think you and both halves of your brain managed quite well given the circumstances. Thanks for sharing your side of the story!

Personnel camera team? lol.gif

They were there to film how fans get ready to meet their idols. Somehow embarrasing but we could get closer than under other circumstances, I think.
