I am in the process of reading the DS9 novels that came after the show ended. There seems to be a gap though in information though. I was just reading STNG: Typhon Pact #1 Zero Sum Game and apparently Bashir and Dax had a bad break up....Okay...where is this? Is it in any of the books?

Oh and thank you mr. david mack for writing that last sentence of the last chapter and leave us hanging....hurry up and write a continuation please...or is it in one of the other books in the typhon pact?

Sigh.

I'll go back to reading The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. So far, we are still woefully and poetically lost in the desert looking for Masada.

The break up is in the "Worlds of Deep Space Nine" series. I think there is a gap of 5 years between the last real post-DS9 book and Typhon Pact. And apparently "Zero Sum Game" is not even the first Typhon Pact novel, the actions of "Rough beast of Empire" take place before. The latter was just published later.

Actually I'm a bit unhappy with the treatment of the DS9 characters. They seem to be a rather unhappy crew. wink.gif And the new interesting characters are either killed or leave the station. I guess it's better than what happens to the Voyager crew in the books - they get killed off one after the other.

I'm trying to read also the post-TNG books and the Titan series. I think (I read somewhere about it, not sure where) they stopped with the DS9 books because there was a change in responsibility at the publishing house. And by the time they sorted it out the ST-movies (Nemesis) and the books taking place after were ahead of time. So they moved the DS9 books (or better: books with DS9 characters) ahead of time, too, to get the timeline right.

That's why you have all those books that have more than one crew appearing. The Destiny Trilogy is quite good. A bit far fetched (but if you ever wanted to know where the Borg originally came from...)

I have never read any of the star trek books. Are they worth a read? And to a new star trek fan would you recommend any?

Out of the star trek series i have loved Voyager the most (Janeway is the ultimate captain). DS9 comes third after TNG. I was slightly unhappy about the way DS9 ended and felt like i needed a little bit more. Do the books add a little bit more creditability to the story line or not worth the bother?

Would love to hear your views as I am currently working my way though Vonnegut, William Gibson, George Martin and Robin Hobb - should I drop these in favor of star trek?

There is no general answer to that. Some books are really great and some are not. wink.gif
From the original series and TNG I like everything that was written by Diane Duane. I stopped with the Voyager books quite early. I think I have just a handfull of Voy books and I don't like them very much. But they all take place in season 1 or 2 and the characters are not really developed. Maybe the later books are better. The same goes for the early DS9 books.
As for the post-show DS9 books: there are a few books that were written by writers who worked for the show. Those are good because the characterisations are okay. With the oher books I sometimes think they spent more time on developing the new characters and forgetting about the "old" ones.
As for the story line after the show ended on TV: It starts out okay at the beginning and becomes so far-fetched sometimes that it's ridiculous in my opinion. (I liked the DS9 ending on TV. wink.gif )

Anything I have read by David Mack so far was good.

I don't know if that is of any help to you. Maybe you can borrow some books from friends or get them from a library to find out if you like them.

For my part I'd say they're worth checking out -- and some people like them; some don't -- Best to pick one up with an open mind and see what you think.

For the continued series (if you just want more DS9 and have seen it all the way through) I reckon the Relaunch series is probably the way to go, starting with Avatar. I wouldn't recommend starting with Worlds of DS9 because there is a lot of previous material from earlier books that it builds on.

Memory Beta has a lot of good info.

Others that I can only say, "Well I liked 'em!"

Hollow Men (sort of continuing on from Inquisition and Pale Moonlight)
Vengeance (a lot of people also say that Fallen Heroes is very good too...)
A Stitch in Time

I always forget about "A stitch in time". It's a great book. smile.gif

Thanks for the recommendations.

I think I'll give them a go if I come across one. I'm a closet trekkie and I don't think my social circle will have any of the books for me to borrow. London secondhand bookstores will provide in time. I can spend hours on Charing Cross road in these book shops as long as I don't accidentally wander into the less PG13 rated ones. This, thankfully, has only happened once and anyone who has been there would understand how easy a mistake it is to make.

Anyway - I run on.

Thanks again. smile.gif
