Full Version: New Roles for Sid
SidCity.net Forums > Off-Topic > Fiction Corner
Sancha
I've been trying to think of what roles that could be developed or created for our favorite actor . . . bet you can't imagine who that is whistling.gif!

I have been investigating El Cid, but I'm not sure he was such a good guy. (Did you know that "El Cid" is a corruption of the Arabic title "Sayyid" or lord. And here I thought it meant "The Kid" blush.gif )

I personally have written an historical novel---unfortunately as of now unpublished---that takes place in England and Persia in the years 1887 thru 1906. It has plenty of Persian characters in it---men---but the protagonist is the typical Victorian Englishman, which really doesn't matter because there are a lot of strong Persian roles. In fact there would even be a role for Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ben Kingsley (has he been knighted, too?) . . . and others.

Currently I'm working on a contemporary story---probably another long one---set in England and would have two roles for Sid---I mean two characters played by one actor: One is an Iranian who fled the Islamic Revolution in that country and therefore grew up and was educated in England, becoming a psychologist. The other role is the Spanish-born Muslim who turns out to be a terrorist. They are connected by one person---the American wife of the Spaniard. Afraid to return to the States, she asks---and needspolitical asylum in England from her husband.

Have you any role ideas yourselves?

I haven't seen Syriana yet but I wouldn't mind seeing him in something contemporary but less political. Like a small drama or romance, something with lots of dialogue (I like talking).

bye1.gif Yes, I know what you mean. Believe me, I don't think you'd be unhappy with my contemporary story. It's not really political at all---that stuff is only used as backdrop to provide more tension. I'm not a writer of action stories, but of relationships. And that is the essence of this story.

Have you seen the DS9 story (aired in the 7th season, if I'm remember correctly) about the intellectually enhanced young woman whom Julian operates on to restore her to a responsive human being and ends up falling in love with her? (I've forgotten the name of that episode, sorry.) My story has the same kind of compassion, caring . . . and romance.

And talking? Yes, that's all the characters do---to work out their individual ethical problems. But hopefully it won't lack for a little suspense. We'll see. hmmm.gif As I mentioned, the story is still in production. biggrin.gif

Yeah, those sound good too. towel.gif Wouldn't it be great to see Sid in a comedy? And I can even imagine him in an evil role---you know, one where the character seems like such a sweetheart, so kind and gentle, but ends up being an axe killer or other? Yes, I'm sure Sid could easily do a role like that, too! cool.gif

These are all great ideas!

On the subject of horror, I took this from the Nanite messageboard.

"Shadow Puppets" features James Marsters ("Buffy"), Jolene Blalock ("Enterprise"), Tony Todd ("DS9").

Shoreline Entertainment has an article about this horror movie. Shooting recently ended.

http://www.shorelineentertainment.com/movi...dowPuppets.html

Because James Marsters was once cast in a role in Andromeda for which Sid had been considered, I tend to watch Marsters's career as a road Sid chose not to take. Marsters did Smallville and now a horror flick while Sid was doing feature films.

I like James Marsters a lot, but I suspect he'll have trouble breaking out of genre roles. Sid has been very lucky that his ethnic look has opened some important doors for him.

To be honest, I tried my own hand at writing a screenplay with Sid in mind. It was based on a novel written by a friend of mine. It's a fantasy about a man who has visions of possible futures. Sadly, I lost all my work on it when I had a hard drive crash last spring. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't write it for James Marsters instead. He's doing genre work and Sid isn't.

Hi Sancha bye1.gif. Yes, I have seen that episode (Chrysalis) and its one of my favorite trek romances. I felt that it was more believable than other "regular character falls in love but must part from beloved" type episodes. I normally hate those. I wish Sarina would come back to DS9--

I actually don't like the idea of Dr. Bashir and Sarina. Doctor and ex-patient relationships rarely ever work, or so I've heard. I didn't like him much with Ezri either. I would much prefer Dr. Bashir with a much more formidable opponent, so to say.

I actually have an idea for a character which would marry Dr. Bashir. I started the idea in '94 but have yet to completely write it down. I would put it here but its a bit lengthy and I haven't got it all down yet (it's just swimming in my head.) This character also comes from a new alien species I invented when I was a kid before DS9 and around the beginning of TNG.
unsure.gif If you all would really like to read it, I'll try to post it soon. (Though I only have the basics, I haven't actually written the story yet.)

O.K.
Here go the basics of my story for Dr. Bashir’s marriage.

I had actually thought of a politically arranged marriage for him, (poor thing,) with a very pretty and intelligent young woman. A princess from an ancient and powerful civilization that has yet to be discovered, her people are just beginning to take interest in the federation because they feel (some of them) that they may start to pose a threat to them (or visa-versa), especially after the outcome of the dominion war. Therefore her people, the Valdorians, decide that a marriage between their princess and the most qualified (intellectually as well as good looking) representative of the federation is in order to preserve the peace. Therefore they pick the genetically enhanced doctor.
Dr. Bashir reluctantly agrees to marry this unknown woman in order to prevent another war (which will ultimately wipe out the federation completely with no doubt.) The rest of the story unfolds similarly like pride and prejudice. He has preconceptions of her, and doesn't really like her, esp. after finding out that she is a princess. She seems to be a spoiled vicious sort of creature. But as they are forced to live together, he starts to see that she isn't exactly what he thought. She even treats her servants and slaves like members of her own family! In short, he discovers that she has real Character and they, of course, fall in love. She lives on the station with him and wishes to change her people’s attitude toward the "more inferior peoples", a.k.a. the Federation.
If you want to know, the princess’s title is: Pre-Empas, SAVaugshe (pronounced sa-vash).

About her name/ title:
Pre-Empas means princess and she will be an Empas after their marriage, which means Empress.
I came up with her name after much consideration. I looked through a name book, but only liked two first names. I picked them because of their meanings, though strangely enough, I am quite familiar with them. I picked for her name the following:
In her country, her first name is Andra (meaning bold/courageous), middle Sidoni (meaning enchantress/seductress) and Vaugshe (meaning royal highness). Written as SAVaugshe. Yes, her people put their first names in the middle, esp. in titles. On the station and by her servants she is called Sidonia, the English translation of Sidoni. Everybody else uses her full title or simply calls her Empas.
She is the one who said the quote that’s on my signature, which I thought up while starting one of her many stories.

(She's kind of my alter ego.) I would aspire to be like this character, as many others would. She is selfless and self-sacrificing. She is an angel, meek and yet can be extremely strong. She is both dependant and independent, depending on the circumstances. She always makes the best decisions. She is a truly powerful and Great leader, and is an exception to Lord Acton's saying "Absolute power corrupts..."
By the way, she is also genetically enhanced, but by a different method. Her parents were always hand picked by her people (The High Consul) before her birth, and they were not always people of wealth and power. Sometimes she would be placed in a very poor family and be raised as a servant. (That’s how the Consul made sure that she would become “pure of heart”. She is also a warrior, with catlike agility and flexibility, and within her holds the strength of the most powerful Klingon. She could actually stop a Bat’leth with her bare hands, like Kahless. (A bit fanciful huh?)

Really, Julian and Sidonia’s relationship would be like the opposing sides of a friendly game of chess. Like Ms. Bennet and Mr. Darcy, or Emma and Mr. Knightly. They are opposites and yet rather similar. (Does this make sense?)

About her people:
Originally they come from another galaxy (the Clouds of Magellan.) They are mostly peaceful intellectuals. They can travel without the need of a transporter (like in A Wrinkle in Time, they transcend through time and space at will.) They are also a spiritual and traditional people. (They Love parties!) They are sometimes telepathic, though usually only to each other. A few are also telekinetic, and even fewer have the ability to change shape, but only into organic things (animals), and earthy elements, wind, mist, fire, etc. (Sidonia can do all the above but nobody knows it, until the station is under siege. She eventually teaches Julian how to communicate telepathically with her, why not after all, he does use far more of his mind than anybody else anyway.) They can be both caporal and non-caporal, though mostly caporal. They usually live extremely long lives. The oldest of this people lived to be 993 yrs of age. Some of these people also live more than one lifetime, after they die they are reborn and live again, usually with the knowledge of their past lives. SAVaugshe lived over 15 millennia’s of lifetimes. Strangely enough, she was also born on earth, her mother had to leave her at the hands of an earthling woman, for their lives were endangered, especially her daughter’s. (She actually has been born on earth or by earthling parents more than once, hence her desire to protect them from the Vatrolians.)
She is the supreme ruler of her country (has been so for most of her lifetimes.) She does not make laws however, just enforces them. She is also responsible for reviewing and signing death sentences for criminals. The High Consul is responsible for the makings of laws. There are twelve members of the consul + the empress (lucky 13.)
Seven are always present in their secluded planet. (A planet just for them!) The handle normal every day decisions in regards to the people and are the judges. The others handle diplomatic situations. The honorary members are ambassadors to the federation and other "more inferior peoples."
Now this mostly good people have a section of bad ones. They are known as the Vatrolians. They are really the group responsible for the violence and hatred towards the "more inferior peoples."
They’re the reasons for the arranged marriage. Dr. Bashir finds out that if he didn’t marry the princess, the Vatrolian prince would have. Then he would have gained her power and use it against other people (he’s not a good person.) So by marrying the princess, the Federation has the Valdorians as allies and is able to keep the evil Prince of Vat’l away.

FYI:
Vat’l is the short form of Vatrolia and Val is the short form of Valdor.

Oh! I almost forgot, Valdor is a Matriarchal society, sorry to the gents, but women rule, and men drool.gif ! (I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself. laughing1.gif I have nothing against the guys, it's just a funny saying! lol.gif)

All right, that’s what I have gathered up since my childhood. Pretty wild huh? I started most of it around '94. It will have a few twists into it, but I confess I'm not much of a writer. I just like creating. I hope to actually write the storyline, I just have a busy crazy life and writing is just a side hobby.
Let me know what your thoughts are (good or bad)? If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

P.S.
blink.gif I warned you it was long. whistling.gif

Since I have changed my signiture quote, here is what it use to say:

"What's a soul without a heart? Perhaps nothing more than a powerful mind filled with great strength and powerful thoughts, but lacking in feeling and conscience." - Sidonia

Has anyone read Olivia Joules? By Helen Fielding who wrote Briget Jones. I reckon Sid would be perfect for the part of Pierre.

The more I think about it the more I come to the conclusion that (if I was a big shot screenwriter instead of one in practicing) I'd like to make a comedy movie starring or co-starring our man. I wouldn't necessarily want it to be a romantic comedy (though that's what a lot of them are, aren't they?), but just something incredibly funny.

Then, of course, I'd want to have him in something incredibly deep. But I'd always want some sort of comedy in there, regardless. I'd have to think some more to write up a story. And I'd have to see more of his acting in other roles (I'm fairly far behind).

I think he'd be great as an uncertain "hero."
TOC
A friend of mine wrote a fantasy novel entitled Blind Vision. Sid would be perfect as Phillipe. I was in the process of attempting to turn it into a screenplay when my HP computer crashed the first time and I never got back to it.

I don't know that Sid would be interested in doing a fantasy at this point in his career, but I do know it would be easier for me to write it if I visualized him in the role.

The female lead is an even more interesting character since she has to change so much.

This might be slightly of this topic but I have always been fascinated by the back story of Sid's "Spooks" character (Khaldun) that was only briefly touched upon.

I always felt his appearance on the train was the end of act one and personally would have loved to have seen in greater detail how a college lecturer ended up in this predicament.

Those of us fortunate enough to have seen Sid live on stage know what a great improvisational comedian he can be. It's not something most producers and directors know about Sid so I'm delighted when he has a chance to meet people -- as he does at Cannes. If people only see Sid on the screen in Kingdom of Heaven, Syriana, Un Homme Perdu and such, it's unlikely they'd guess how funny he can be.

I don't suppose Sid will ever be in a comedy and I don't know that I'd want to see him as a 40 year old virgin or as a night watchman in a museum, but dramas and action movies tend to have humor and I want as many directors and producers as possible to know that Sid does humor extraordinarily well!

Actually, I have to agree with Peridot. There was a lot of humor in DS9 (and I'm not only talking about Ferengi Slapstick - there was more, subtile, but it was there). DS9 had more humor than the other ST shows but people always forget because of the dominion war arc etc.

But I also agree with that:

I like it when humor is just there and not extra written. You know, when it feels naturally. I also enjoy Slapstick and I definately enjoy Ben Stiller movies biggrin.gif , but I can't imagine Sid doing it.

I'm sure he does humor very well, however, I can't think this is the direction he is going, given the background he is building and the roles he is choosing. There is, as you say, the opportunity in action and some dramas for humor, and that might be something he might do if he chooses. However, as stated above, I don't really want to see him in a 40 year old virgin type of movie.

If Sid and Patricia Clarkson were to star in another movie together, what could it be? How about a remake of "The Wind and the Lion"? The script could be rewritten to make it feel fresh. They could probably get in a lot of topical political points. But not in a heavy way. Keep the movie fun to watch. smile.gif Sid would play Sean Connery's character, the Berber sultan, Raisuli,--the "Lion" of the movie's title--who kidnaps Mrs. Pedecaris (Patricia Clarkson). Or even if someone other than Patricia Clarkson was cast as Mrs. Pedecaris, I would still like to see Sid in this movie as Raisuli. I think it would be a great role for him. Raisuli seems just the kind of character Sid likes to portray. And maybe George Clooney as President Teddy Roosevelt? Matt Damon as Captain Jerome? Oh well, just so long as Sid plays Raisuli. biggrin.gif

I know this is a really old thread, but I can't resist. I always though it would be really funny if Sid played a comedic villian. I wrote one once in a screenplay for class. He was a crazy Englsh publisher who was absolutely nasty to the protagonist. Anyway, he ended up barely being in the story. But I always though a nasty comedic villian would be hysterical. Kind of like Mirror Bashir only funny. Know what I mean? maybe like in a superhero movie, that would work.

As a former actress myself, you do need to stretch your acting muscles once and awhile and do something outside your usual. That would definitely do it!

As far as myself, I am sorry I didn't do more drama.
