I've been keeping an eye on David Poland's Oscar predictions page for awhile now, and waiting for him to get a good look at Syriana. Finally, in his latest update, Sid appears in his possible Best Support Actor lineup: 20 Weeks to Oscar.

I love how he mentions 'the Great KOH performer'. Finally! Someone else notices!

Yay, good for you Sid! Even if he doesn't get the award (and that's a big if!) it's great that he's been up for a nomination anyway. Here's the pre-award applause - clap2.gif

What is of note is that it looks like a very strong year for male roles. Simply being mentioned in this company is a major feather in Sid's cap.

Looks like the hard work is paying off big time.

All the best

This is GREAT early buzz! And having Clooney and the screenwriter on the list as well is fabulous! Go Syriana. cheer.gif

This is excellent! clap2.gif

Even if it is only speculation so far, it's very good that people start noticing him.

I just hope I'll be able to watch the movie before the nomination list comes out. tongue.gif

Oh, that would be great...if only just to see the look on Joni's face when they say, "and the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor goes to Alexander Siddig!"
It'd look something like this blink.gif
Mine would be like: cheer.gif or even drool.gif
Rock on! (does coldplay rock?)

Poland has updated his award predictions list again (he does so weekly), and Sid is still holding a pretty good spot on the list:

Alexander Siddig - Syriana
Haven't seen the film, but his name is getting mentioned in-house a lot

clap2.gif towel.gif cheer.gif If he thinks Sid's name is 'getting mentioned in-house a lot' now, wait till his other three projects get out there, particularly Hannibal.

In further Oscar news, it appears that Warner Bros. has decided to push Syriana in the Best ADAPTED Screenplay category instead of ORIGINAL as was being bandied about over the past month. It's considered an almost guaranteed nominee in the ADAPTED category.

I just posted a reply, read it, then deleted it.

All I want to say is:

My jaw is hitting the floor. My stepdaughter read the thread and has adapted her birthday card to say "Go Sid, Go Sid!"

And all I want to say is, "Hey, we guessed it all along ohmy.gif tongue.gif "

Another Oscar list, another mention of Sid. biggrin.gif

The Backstage has published its current Oscar predictions, with Sid landing in their "Tier II" list for Best Supporting actor:

QUOTE
Best Supporting Actor:

Tier I:
Clifton Collins Jr., Capote
Kevin Costner, The Upside of Anger
Brian Cox, Match Point
Daniel Craig, Munich
Matt Damon, Syriana
Jamie Foxx, Jarhead
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain
Bob Hoskins, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Richard Jenkins, North Country
Frank Langella, Good Night, and Good Luck
Barry Pepper, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Christopher Plummer, The New World
Christopher Plummer, Syriana
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Match Point
Peter Sarsgaard, Jarhead

Tier II:
Christian Bale, The New World
Gary Beach, The Producers
Don Cheadle, Crash
Chris Cooper, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash
Terrence Howard, Crash
William Hurt, A History of Violence
Craig T. Nelson, The Family Stone
Geoffrey Rush, Munich
Kurt Russell, Munich
Alexander Siddig, Syriana
Ken Watanabe, Memoirs of a Geisha
Jeffrey Wright, Syriana

You'll notice that Matt Damon, Christopher Plummer, Chris Cooper and Jeffrey Wright are all also on this list. With press/critics screenings just about to begin for Syriana, we should start to see a clearer focus on which of this obviously amazing supporting cast is going to be the breakout star a la Benicio del Toro in Traffic. My money, of course, is on Sid. wink.gif

Oh! That rocks!

Go Sid! Go Sid!

We knew Sid had it in him!
Mel
David Poland's latest predictions are posted and Sid is still considered on the "short list" for a possible nomination. However, the fact that Warner Bros. hasn't screened the film for critics/press yet is starting to be seen as a sign of lack of confidence in the film. Ah, the roller coaster ride that is awards season. biggrin.gif
Mel
David Poland's new column is up and reflects the shift in the award prognosticators focus: the trailer for Munich was released this week and instantly pushed the film to the front of the pack. And yet, in the middle of all of the "Munich is practically a shoo-in for Best Picture" talk, he makes this statement:
QUOTE
And the movie that could really increase the danger for Munich is Syriana. If it can get nominated for Best Picture, it could siphon off votes from the thematically related Spielberg movie.

Meanwhile, over in his Best Picture predictions, Syriana enters his list at number 10, and Sid remains in the race for Best Supporting Actor.

I may be missing something but what does "will he pop?" mean?

He's questioning whether Sid as Prince Nasir will be a strong enough presence in the film to be a real contender. Remember, very few people have actually seen the movie yet. We have another few days before the screenings begin in earnest, so all of this speculation is really just that: speculation. But the fact that he's getting such buzz from an as-yet-largely-unseen performance is promising.

Oh..I wish he'll be nominated for the oscar!!!!!!!!

I don't know whether to just repeat "please please please" across the screen here, or get out my Harry Potter wizarding paraphernalia and start casting "wish" spells... blink.gif hmmm.gif
