He certainly doesn't slow down, does he? blink.gif We're pleased to announce Sid's NEXT role - he is currently in Bulgaria filming the BBC docudrama Hannibal, in which he plays the titular general. Sid is very excited about this, his first major starring role. Here's what he had to say about it a couple of weeks ago:

QUOTE
Right now I'm playing Hannibal for the BBC in a biopic of the same name due to be released on tv in the UK in January (it will also air in the US and Germany). It's hugely ambitious and should be quite exciting providing the post production gods smile nicely on the project. It's a full 90 minutes and has hundreds of extras and elephants and weirdly is beginning to look nearly as spectacular as Kingdom of Heaven did on a fraction of the budget (quite literally 2%!). It's alot of fun and a serious challenge to play one the great historical figures. Lots of riding - lots of sword fighting etc. A lot of fun I hope for everyone when it airs.

A few photos are posted in the Gallery, but I thought I'd share this one at the very least:

Hi Everyone.

I wonder if this is from the same production team behind the Ghenghis Khan piece aired this summer. If it is from them then it is going to be fabulous.

What a fantastic role for Sid

All the best

As a matter of fact it is the same director - Edward Bazalgette (GENGHIS KHAN, VENICE) - and it's produced by Ailsa Orr (POMPEII: THE LAST DAY, SUPERVOLCANO).
POTHOS
Hi.

I saw the Pompeii drama / doc as well. Both strong on facts and beautiful visuals. What could be of interest to everyone is that in both pieces (if this old memory of mine recalls correctly) have the drama unfolds in the native tongue of the subject matter intercut with a concise voice over.

We could potentially be watching Sid act in the native tongue of Hannibal.

All I can say is wow!

If you find something which definately can't be right (because I invented a new english word or something) let me know. For example I don't know what "Khartager" is in english. (Something like "Carthagian"?)

QUOTE
Hannibal crossed the alps together with 37 elephants to catch the Romans off-guard. Then there was Cato whose memorable saying "Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam" became true some time. We don't know anything else. That is where the BBC benefits from: not in the alps, a suburb of Tunis or Rome but in a quarry near the Bulgarian capital Sofia. There they are filming "Hannibal", together with "Prosieben" as a co-producer. The elephants come from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the snow from a canon and the leading actor originally from Sudan. Alexander Siddig plays Hannibal in that - what actually is it?

"It's a Bio-Pic", says the actor who endures the burning sun dressed in his leather-tanned and fur-trimmed armour. The genetically enhanced doctor Dr. Julian Bashir from "Deep Space Nine" looks wild wearing the costume of the [Karthager ], his amber eyes gleaming. "When I wear my costume the women react totally different", he laughs. But there is only one woman in the film, Hannibals wife Himilce. The story is based on facts only, nothing is added or exaggerated. Two researchers and an expert team of university professors were consulted to reconstruct Hannibal's life.

"There are only two sources, Polybius and Livius. The history of Hannibal was only retold by his enemies, the Romans", says Serena Davis the BBC-Researcher. "We'd liked to write some more women into the story. But history is setting us some limits", describes Thomas von Hennet ("prosieben"). That means the film has to do without sex and certain dramatic elements like treachery of his own people because the official sources don't tell anything about it.

The facts are included in dialogues. Hannibal explains his strategies also in retrospect from his exile in Bithynien. That means the viewers won't notice that they are "fed with information", like producer Ailsa Orr says. The ancient Romans also don't told anything about any descendants of Hannibal. "I don't think he didn't have children. I in his place I would have had a lot.", says Siddig, grinning in the Bulgarian quarry.

"It is a factual drama - a film which shows a scientific area to the viewers." That's how Ailsa Orr sees her project. She is at home in the area of facts and also made the BBC-productions "Pompeii" and "Supervolcano". Now it's Hannibal who crossed the alps 218 before Christ with 37 elephants and 55000 soldiers. "I'm in love with this guy since I was six years old", says the serious, beautiful young woman who seems relaxed despite of the stressful filming. "He was so passionate in everything he did." In 28 days 90 minutes of film material are produced and everything with an unusual low budget between three and four million Euro.

Bulgaria is cheaper than the alps but money has to be saved everywhere. There are a lot of Bulgarians working on the set and there are often communication problems. They pave the way to the set in wild costumes with artificial snow in their beards and bristly hair. The "snow" is coming from a shabby fire engine, the costumes are made at the location. "I have only 40000 pound for making the costumes of 400 people including stuntmen and weapons. But I'm a flexible person.", says Isolde Sommerfeldt the costume designer with an optimistic smile. The three elephants were equipped with impressive leather and iron head-pieces.

"I hate to work with animals when you have to use a whip. But here it works the other way around: If the elephants doing something right they get a reward", explains Phil Dolling, the Science Executive Producer of BBC. It was important to Ailsa Orr while searching some elephants that "the animals are being loved", and she didn't spare no expense.

To spent a moment with Sonni Frankello from Platschow in Vorpommern is enough to understand why those three huge animals cope so well with the situation. When Mala, Timba and Kenia get impatient he talk with calm voice and gives them a piece of sugar. It took three days to get the elephants in a truck to Bulgaria. As for Hannibals plan to cross the alps with African elephants he says: "He was crazy. The animals must have suffered a lot." Actually only one elephant survived the torture. They probably froze to death. But Frankellos elephants like it in Bulgaria. "Elephants love changes. Yesterday we visited a source and a mountain. They like that. If something repeats to often they get bored." But with the speed the BBC production is progressing that shouldn't happen.

"Why don't we call it "One of the biggest stories in history?", says director Ed Bazalgette. He already made "Ghenghis Khan" for the BBC a 60 minutes film. Siddig says that Miramax want to have the guy for a Hollywood Blockbuster because he is able to make very authentic films with a very low budget. "I looked closer at "Troy" and "Alexander" to understand how they could spend 80 million dollar on it", explains Bazalgette. And he is proud on his "Hannibal": "We can make big, epic stories with little money". If he is right? We won't have proof until next year when the "Factual-Bio-Pic-Drama" will air on TV.

This is the link to the original article. (For everyone who wants to read it again in german.)

So this is a BBC production with a german television company co-producing..... So we have english actor and director and german elephants.

Ulli,

Thank you so much for sharing this article. I'd love to use it in the newsletter. Would that be all right with you? If so, please e-mail your name to me for the translation credit. If you're not a member of FBTS, please also send me your address and I can mail you a copy of the November issue when it comes out.

Thanks again!

Aww yay! Congratulations to Sid, I hope this comes out in Australia. The character is fascinating!

I think Sid has finally found a way to educate me. He's making up for my 7th grade year.
The Crusades: in one ear and out the other.
I think Hannibal was in there somewhere, but I can hardly remember!
I'm sure he'll find ways of making up all the other years of my education as well!

Von Bashir zu Hannibal
neue Rolle für Alexander Siddig
Sonntag, 16.

Could one of our German Sidsters give a proper translation so that this makes sense please? Thanks ever so! We all know that Sid was never involved in The Load Legion or Kingdom of the Skies. laughing1.gif

This past Sunday evening, I watched the documentary on the National Geographic channel called Hannibal V Rome. It was a two hour program and it was very interesting. It is the story of Hannibal from child to hero and then, ultimately, to ruin. Very well told and it gives us an idea of what we will be seeing Sid having to do. I found myself rooting for Hannibal while watching this show and hoping he would really defeat the Romans. Unfortunately, his motives were not really completely for his people as much as they were for revenge and maybe a tad bit of glory for himself. At least that's the way this show showed it to you.

If you are interested and you get the National Geographic channel in your area, they will repeat the show tonight as well as this Saturday and Monday, the 7th.

laughing1.gif

It's basically the german translation of the bit that Mel posted. It has also a few quotes of the article I already translated. And it promises a pic of Sid riding on an elephant in the Sidcity gallery. (Maybe I need new glasses but the pic they are probably referring to, shows him standing with two elephants. tongue.gif I wonder if he actually did ride one of them.)
It also tells us that he was filming in Romania.(Well, Romania, Bulgaria - what is the difference? biggrin.gif )

It seems that trektoday.com has taken the information from the sidcity site and summarized it not very good. Then treknews.de translated it. And that is what came out.

And then you used dictionary.com............... laughing1.gif

tongue.gif You have to blame dictionary.com.

There is a new article about Sonni Frankello - that's the guy who owns the elephants.
It's mostly about him telling how exiting it was for him and his elephants and how much fun they had.
He is playing the "Mahoot" (the guy who cares for the elephants)
Since the elephants are also Sid's co-stars biggrin.gif I thought you might be interested in some new photos showing two of them together with Frankello on the set in Bulgaria. (it says that this are his private photos, so I give you the link)

You have to scroll down a little bit.

Uk members who get Channel 5 might be interested to know that there is a programme about Hannibal on there too this Tuesday.

If you get FBTS, you'll have the translation of the German article on page three. I asked Georg to translate it for us and I included it as proof that Sid City has international recognition. Of course the original announcement is on page one so people can see how details can change with the re-telling.

Also on page three you'll find Sid's comments about making "The Last Legion", Armin's request for Star Trek aliens to attend a physics seminar at the Goethe-Institut, and Pothos's review of the DVD of KoH. Two of those items came in just as I was finishing up the issue. If they hadn't arrived, I would have had to write an editorial. Whew! That was close!

It will probably air on the Discovery Channel in the US in a few weeks. That's what happened with Ghengis Khan and Pompeii, which were made by the same people who made Hannibal.

Mel, now I am *not* sure this is the one, but I went to the Discovery.com website and did find a listing for Hannibal.

According to their website, Hannibal will be on Monday, Jan.23 at Noon Eastern. But I get no more information. Not is it a documentray, a movie, who is in it, length of the program, etc. They seem to only list detailed info by the week.

I'll keep an eye out for more details.

What's odd blink.gif , is that when I did the search for Hannibal on Discovery.com, it came up for all the channels of Discovery's family- Travel, Animal Planet, etc. I would think it's on just Discovery, but I'll know as it gets closer. It was listed only for Noon on the 23rd so far.

I will be taping. If it pops up again, I can tape for others, just have to get blanks......

hmmm.gif biggrin.gif

Well, I have some more info on that Hannibal program on the Military Channel.

It seems it's only an hour and it is a documentary. Don't know if any footage from Sid's Hannibal.

Well, I found out the documentary on Monday the 23rd on the Military channel is *not* Sid's. According Yahoo! TV, the original broadcast date for it was January 2002. So that is right out.

Well that's a relief. I was wondering why they'd relegate the show to a 12PM airing.
